THEORY & CRAFT SEMINAR: STUDYING THE BLACK ROM-COM
Sessions run over Zoom Wednesdays Feb 4, 11, 18, and 25 at 5pm PST/8pm ET, for sessions that will go up to two hours. This is a discussion-based course.
Payment plans available! Check-out to set one up through Klarna (a service not affiliated with The Spring School), or email alanna@iamspringproductions.com to inquire about setting one up directly with us.

This class is designed to take you deeper than ever into what makes a great romance (and especially a great rom-com) tick — to deepen your own writing and/or your own experience as a viewer and appreciator of the genre. We will be studying classics throughout the ages, all centering Black performers and angles on what makes up Black love. What can we learn from them? Which tropes are still working for us, and which would we like to see retired immediately? What makes onscreen Black love so vital, and what do we want from it moving forward?
This class is brought to you by Alanna Bennett, a screenwriter, author, and culture writer who has approached this topic from all the aforementioned perspectives. Class will also feature craft & industry Q&As with Alanna, and if we can swing it there may be BONUS TALKS FROM INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS.
WEEK ONE:
The Best Man / How Stella Got Her Groove Back / Love Jones
WEEK TWO:
Paris Blues / Watermelon Woman
WEEK THREE:
Love Basketball / Brown Sugar / Black Orpheus
WEEK FOUR:
Just Wright / Waiting to Exhale
BECAUSE THIS CLASS STARTS IN THE NEW YEAR, I'M ALSO HAPPY TO TALK ABOUT HOW TO SURPRISE A LOVED ONE WITH THE COURSE AS A GIFT!
