There is a lot of talk out there about the rom-com renaissance, that era during the '90s and early '00s when romantic comedy films were the biggest movies out there, starring the biggest people, and written by the greats. There's a lot of nostalgia for that time, and for good reason. But our current era is not without its memorable rom-com moments. This class is designed to take you deeper than ever into what makes a great rom-com tick — to deepen your own writing and/or your own experience as a viewer and appreciator of the genre. We will be studying a few of the notable rom-coms — and rom-dramedies — that have been released in the past ten years. What can we learn from them? Which are destined to be considered classics? Which deserved theatrical releases? Which tropes are still working for us, and which would we like to see retired immediately?
This class is brought to you by Alanna Bennett, a screenwriter, author, and culture writer who has approached this topic from all the aforementioned perspectives. Class will also feature BONUS TALKS FROM INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS, as well as craft & industry Q&As with Alanna.
There will likely be another course of this kind in the future that will explore even more movies of this era.
WEEK ONE: Intros & Crafting Chemistry
VIEWING AHEAD OF WEEK ONE: To All the Boys I've Loved Before, Sleeping With Other People
WEEK TWO: Blending Tones
VIEWING AHEAD OF WEEK TWO: Materialists, The Idea Of You, Good Luck to You Leo Grande
WEEK THREE: Remixing Tropes
VIEWING AHEAD OF WEEK THREE: Long Shot, Bros
WEEK FOUR: The Path Forward
VIEWING AHEAD OF WEEK FOUR: Obvious Child, Rye Lane
